My love of art was a well-kept secret until age 37. Having come from a middle class family where art was considered only for the wealthy with nothing else to do, I found an outlet in sewing and functional crafts. But when the yellow and white tents would miraculously appear each September in Brewster Gardens, I’d marvel at the artwork displayed. I’d wonder, “Why did the judges choose this painting?” “How did that artist create those amazing colors and such realistic three dimensional forms?” At the time I was babysitting for a wonderful art teacher, Virginia Freyermuth, who said, “Anyone can draw!” She encouraged me and helped me produce a montage of family portraits, a “coming out.” Thanks to her support and that of my husband and 2 children, I was able to go to art school. I now share this creative passion along with my love of children teaching art at Manomet Elementary School.
