Mary Callahan
WATERCOLOR
l. Paints - I prefer Winsor Newton Artists Watercolors or DaVinci, but less expensive student grade, Cotman, or Marie’s (from Ocean State) will do.

Colors you need

* Permanent Alizarin Crimson * Winsor violet or mauve or cobalt
* Cadmium Red Light Violet
* New Gamboge * Turquoise
Other colors that are nice to have
* Aureolin or Cadmium yellow light * yellow ochre or raw sienna
* French Ultramarine Blue * Cerulean Blue
*Thalo Blue or Winsor Blue or Antwerp * Cobalt Blue
Blue * Winsor Red
*Thalo or Winsor Green * Burnt Sienna

2. Brushes

* 1 inch and 1/2 inch Aquarelle flat - (Winsor & Newton series 995 are good)
* Size 12 Round sable or synthetic
* Smaller size brushes (only if you must)

(Utrecht’s #40 wash brush is very nice and also inexpensive)

3. Paper

* D’Arches 140 lb. Cold Press - full sheets (22x30) can be cut to size - this way is
most economical. Blocks are convenient- size 9X12, 12x16; 14x20; or 18x24.
* Fabriano, Waterford, and Lanaquarelle are good papers also. but Arches is my
favorite

4. Support
* If you choose a block of paper you don’t need this. To support loose sheets you will need a piece of masonite, or 1/4” thick plexiglass, or a piece of gessoed foam core cut a few inches larger than paper.

5. Masking Tape

6. White Eraser

7. Pencil

8. Paper Towels or old towels, tissues and a kitchen sponge.

9. Water container - cool whip container works well

10. Palette - one with a cover is best - example: The John Pike Palette

Developing Your Unique Style
Please bring supplies for any drawing or painting art medium that you are comforable with.
For the first class, bring examples of work done from the past, across as many ages as possible. Dig deep for those primary schools images and your most recent work. We can learn from how we saw things as a child as well as how we see today.

Subsequent classes will involve mechanisms for searching inward to discover what is most important to each artist and how to present that idea. By finding other works that speak to them, looking at  other artist imagery that inspire and using  tools I have found productive in making a powerful personal statement we will use each class to add to our storehouse  of exercises and techniques that lead to discovering more about yourself and thus your artwork.

Quilting
MARINER’S  COMPASS
(Ann Lainhart)

These instructions are for a 12” 16 point split-point compass. The Mariner’s Compass is not a block for beginning quilters. It requires accurate cutting and piecing and your first attempt may not lay flat, but it is such a beautiful block that it is worth the effort.

Supplies for drafting the compass:

Drawing paper at least 14” square
Mechanical pencil or several very sharp pencils
Protractor – should be one at least 5” or 6” in diameter
Compass
12” ruler – one where the edge is on the paper, an ordinary ruler or a drafting ruler. Do not try to use an 1/8” thick quilter’s ruler; the thickness may throw off the accruacy of your drafted compass
Thick template plastic – if possible with a grid – do not try to use the kind that comes rolled up
Ultra-fine Sharpie pen – I find these are the best for marking on the template plastic
Masking tape

Supplies for piecing the compass:

½ yard each of a medium and a dark fabric for the compass points
½ yard light background fabric; cut it along the fold, so you have a fat quarter to cut pieces from and a fat quarter for the square into which the compass will be set
Thread to match the medium fabric and to match the background fabric
Basic sewing supplies
Sewing machine
Rotary cutter, mat, and ruler

STRIP PIECED CHINESE LATTICE WORKSHOP
(Ann Lainhart)

Students choose from one of two Chinese Lattice designs to make. My website shows these two choices, Garden of Happiness and Oriental Fern Garden.

Supply list:

1 yard each of background fabric and lattice fabric. Make sure the background fabric is a busy print that will not show seam lines and make sure there is good contrast between the background and lattice fabrics.

Thread to match the lattice fabric.

Rotary cutter; we will be cutting quite a few strips, so a new blade might be good idea.

Mat; 18” by 24” size works best for cutting the initial strips, but smaller ones may be used later. In fact, two students could share an 18” by 24” mat as long as one of them also had a smaller one.

6” by 24” ruler and any smaller ones you have.

Sewing machine

drawing review for pastel artists
(Donna Rossetti-Bailey)

· Hard Pastels – NuPastel or Prismacolor Brand – not required, but helpful
· Soft Pastels –Good brands are Rembrandt, Unison, Sennelier, Terry Ludwig, Winsor & Newton, Great American, etc. ½ sticks are fine. If you have iridescent pastels be sure to bring them!
· Pitt Brand Pens in “Shades of Gray”: not necessary, but helpful if you have them for doing value studies. Set of 6, about $7.99 from ASW
· Kneadable eraser and a regular eraser
· Vine charcoal
· Newsprint Pad
· Sketchbook and sketching tools: including a RULER, HB, 2B, and 4B pencils
· Pastel Paper – Bring a few pieces of pastel paper or surfaces you like to work with: Canson, Wallis, Art Spectrum, Rives BFK or 300 pound hot press watercolor paper prepared with a ground, etc.
· Tape or clips to keep your paper attached to a drawing board
· Drawing board and easel
· A small bag or container of corn meal to clean your pastels
· An apron
· A soft cloth and an old towel for underneath your easel.
· Latex gloves to protect your hands (if you wear them)
· Old bristle brushes – not good watercolor brushes.
· A photograph that has some type of architecture in it: a house, barn, shed, etc.

Watercolor paper: 140lb. cold press paper. I prefer working on Arches, quarter-sheet size 15 x 11 or larger. Use whatever kind you prefer, but a quality brand is recommended.

Sketchbook: For planning paintings, sketches and taking notes. Please write your name and address inside, in case it's misplaced.

Paints: Tube paints in any size, Divinci, American Journey or Winsor Newton are good brands, but any brand will do. Alizarin crimson, cadmium red, french ultramarine, antwerp or winsor blue, new gamboge, raw sienna and burnt sienna. Optional colors; cadmium orange, winsor red, cobalt blue and violet or your choice.

Palette: A palette with deep wells and a cover to keep paint moist is best. My favorites are the Pike andCheap Joe’s palette.

Brushes: Quality not Quantity! To start, have a 1" flat, 1/2" flat, #8 or #10 round. Optional; old tooth brush, bristle fan brush, #4 rigger, 2" flat. Robert Simmons brand are good brushes at a modest price, build your supply as you can afford them.

Odds & ends: Water bucket, tracing paper, graphite paper, tissue or paper towels, small natural sponge, single edge razor blade or old credit cards, salt, ruler, soft leaded pencils (3-9B), kneaded eraser, masking fluids, spray bottle and pieces of plastic wrap.
