on pen and ink, students will work on location and explore
different drawing techniques to create “studies”. Charcoal,

Sailor’s Valentine
Basic Workshop

Location: The Plymouth Center for the Arts
Tuition: $450.00 includes materials and lunch at a
local restaurant
At the
Tuesday session, Sandi will explain the use of supplies and
get right down to making seashell flowers. As you progress,
she will discuss elements of design that are traditionally
used in Sailors’ Valentines and add a few contemporary
twists. A day in between classes gives you the opportunity
to play. When class resumes on Thursday Sandi will answer
your questions and guide you through successfully designing
your unique valentine. At the end of the two days you will
have a working design that you can transfer to the mahogany
box at your leisure.
Materials supplied include an 8” hand-crafted mahogany box,
a large variety of colorful seashells, glue and tweezers.
You need to bring an empty egg carton, a compass for drawing
circles, scissors, transparent tape and your imagination.
Small shells and a turntable are optional.
A
Sailor’s Valentine is a seashell mosaic created and
displayed in an octagonal wooden box, traditionally made
during the whaling era.
In this two day workshop learn about the history of these
beautiful art pieces and make one of your own.

This is a great
opportunity to fine tune your skills and learn to make some new
flowers. If you need additional inspiration to complete a valentine,
this is also the right class for you.
This year’s project is an 11”x14” shadowbox to feature your favorite
seashell flower. All skills are transferable to use in Sailors’
Valentines.
Materials supplied include the shadowbox, a fresh tube of glue and
shells required to make new flowers. Please bring your tweezers,
bottle caps, empty egg carton, and a large assortment of pre-made
seashell flowers.
